Baleh Kapit Raft Safari 5 - 8 April 2012

The Baleh Kapit Raft Safari this year is held on the riverside town of Kapit on the 5 - 8 of April 2012 and more than 30 teams participated in this year edition.

Unfortunately, I only managed to catch the action on the last day which is the 'powerboat' race, locally made boats based on the F1 Powerboat design but much smaller and with open top.  Here are some of the pictures taken.

Pelagus Rapids
Day 3

Later, proceed by motorised longboat travelling upriver to Long Segaham, a village of the Kejaman with 5 longhouses.  The upriver trip takes about an hour.  Upon arrival, pay the chief a visit before tour of the longhouses around the village with your guide.  The uniqueness of this village is that it still has the Salong, a burial hut supported by one wooden pillar beautifully carved with Orang Ulu motive standing more than 10 feet tall.  The burial hut was where the bones of previous chiefs (kept in jar) are stored.  Sadly nowadays a lot of this Salong and Kelirieng (burial pole intricately carved but without the hut on top) which is usually located in front of the longhouses have been removed and few longhouses still have these and Long Segaham is among one of these rare few that still do.  In the olden days, Salong / Kelirieng can only be afforded by the chiefs or aristocrats.  Afterwards, take a rest and wait for dinner time.

Dinner at the longhouse and then gather at the verandah together with the villagers to get to know them better, chit chat and exchange stories over some local coffee/tea and snacks.  This is also the time to present the gifts bought earlier but remember to keep some for another longhouse visit the next day.  Afterwards, can opt for either night fishing using longboats out to the river or go for a night walk in the jungle and frog hunting.

Overnight in the Long Segaham longhouse with mattress and mosquito netting provided.
Meals:  Breakfast / Dinner

Salong (Orang Ulu Burial Hut)
Day 4
Breakfast at longhouse and any catch (fish or frogs) from previous night will be cooked and served as well.
After breakfast, witness blowpipe shooting demonstration.  Eventhough the native in this remote part of Sarawak now use guns for hunting, blowpipe is still widely used.  You are most welcome to try it out yourself.

Afterwards bid goodbye and proceed by motorised longboat downriver to Belaga.  Enroute stop for brief visit at 2 longhouses along the way, a Lahanan longhouse and a Sekapan longhouse.  During the trip can see a few Salong and Kelirieng scattered around the riverbank.  A brief stop will be made a Belaga to pick up some food ration and then continue journey downriver and then into one of the river tributaries and try traditional style fishing by bamboo fishing rod and by net.  The guide and boatman will cook the fishes you catch together with the rations picked up at Belaga cooking in the traditional way using bamboo plus some BBQ as well.  Enjoy the picnic lunch by the river.  Afterwards, proceed by longboat to another tributary all the way to the Tepin Waterfall where you can have a swim in the cool clear water.

After the picnic in mid afternoon, continue journey downriver to Long Dungan, an old Kenyah village consisting of a series of 6 longhouses and home to about 500 plus people.  Upon arrival, proceed to meet the village chief (if he is around).  Afterwards,  tour the longhouse with your guide and learn further about the lifestyle and culture of the Kenyah people.  Free at leisure till dinner time.

SALONG - Orang Ulu Burial Hut

Salong, the Orang Ulu burial hut where the bones of past chief stored in jar is kept in the hut.  This is a common sight along the upper Rejang River usually located in front of the longhouse.  This practice was done in the olden days and only affordable by the village chief and aristocrats.  There are 2 types, ie. supported by a single wooden beam intricately carved (above pic) and the other is on the ground where the jars containing the bones are buried under the groun (pic below).
